The current bond ETF can be divided into two groups: Group of the Treasury yield curve and asset class groups.
IShares Lehman 1-3 (SHY), iShares Lehman 7-10 years (IEF) and iShares Lehman 20 + Year (TLT) to cover lots of short, medium and long term, respectively, of the Treasury yield curve. Unlike bond instruments themselves, etfs are perpetual and therefore can not ignore the market risk. The ability to dynamically hedge position and exposure to active bond funds are less volatile than the benchmark.
The ETF and cash flow are generally easy to speculate on the Treasury yield curve. In the current environment of the yield curve inverted, SHY is hopelessly dominated by money market funds with zero duration.
The asset class of bonds etfs iShares Lehman Aggregate Bond (AGG), iShares GS $ investop Corp Bond (RFL), and iShares Lehman TIPS Bond (TIP) of each exposure to a wide area of the universe of investment grade (RFL) to liquid corporate bonds and (TIP) to the universe of TIPS.
Lehman Aggregate (AGG) is the reference point for most bond funds investment grade. Based on the global market for investment grade are very balanced in the short term U.S. Treasury And government agency securities. AGG is the "sweet spot" of very low credit risk, short duration and reasonably attractive returns.
The set is the underlying index of the Popular Vanguard Total Bond Market Index Fund (VBMFX). If you do not want to fuss with asset management, AGG is probably the best option for a bonus allocation of the ETF.
